Our verdict
A gentle, unusual bit of local history as much as a nature spot — good for brimstone and orange-tip butterflies in spring blossom season. Park on Green Lane and walk in via Bryon Way and Thomas Wyatt Road.
A small Wiltshire Wildlife Trust reserve on the grounds of the former Wiltshire County Lunatic Asylum (later Roundway Hospital), combining an old Bramley apple orchard with a Victorian cricket field. Volunteers have been replacing diseased trees with local Wiltshire varieties, including one named Roundway Magnum Bonum.
Wiltshire Wildlife Trust reserve — free to explore on foot; many are dog-free to protect wildlife.
