Our verdict
A genuine community success story — a once-neglected wood turned back into a proper local nature reserve by volunteers, with a decent path network as a result. Worth combining with Peppercombe Wood, a short drive away on the other side of Urchfont.
A 14-hectare ancient woodland in Urchfont parish, brought back into active management in 1994 by the volunteer Friends of Oakfrith Wood with help from the county Forestry Officer and Wiltshire Wildlife Trust. Improved access, a pond and information boards followed after Local Nature Reserve status in 2004, and a Millennium Copse of around 900 native broadleaves was planted in 2000 to extend the original wood.
