Our verdict
One of the best big-view walks in this whole area, and deservedly popular — the White Horse alone draws people up from Alton Barnes, but the open down keeps going well beyond it if you want more of a leg-stretch. Car park on the Pewsey Downs gives access to the whole hillside on foot.
The tallest hill in Wiltshire at 295 metres, part of the Pewsey Down Nature Reserve and home to the Alton Barnes White Horse — cut into the chalk in 1812 on the ridge connecting Milk Hill to neighbouring Walker's Hill, with sweeping views over the Vale of Pewsey below.
Open access land — you can roam freely on foot.
