A genuinely important stretch of downland archaeologically as well as scenically — three named summits, three different periods of prehistory, all on unspoiled chalk grassland. Combine with Milk Hill and the Alton Barnes White Horse just to the west for a full ridge walk.
The eastern stretch of the Pewsey Downs National Nature Reserve, continuing the same escarpment as Milk Hill along Knap Hill, Walker's Hill and Golden Ball Hill. Knap Hill holds a Neolithic causewayed enclosure — the first ever excavated and identified as such — while Walker's Hill has Adam's Grave, a Neolithic long barrow with sweeping views over the Vale of Pewsey, and Golden Ball Hill shows even older signs of Mesolithic activity.
National Nature Reserve — one of the country's finest wildlife sites. Open, but stick to marked trails.
