Our verdict
Not everyone's idea of a nature walk, but it's a quiet, shaded, well-loved green space in the middle of the town — treat it with the same respect you would any cemetery and keep dogs on leads. Worth it for the history as much as the wildlife.
An 11.5-acre Victorian cemetery opened in 1881 and now holding some 33,000 burials, closed to new plots since the early twentieth century and formally designated a Local Nature Reserve in 2005. Mature trees and undisturbed corners make it a genuinely peaceful, if unusual, place to walk.
