Westbury Beacon

Our verdict

Everything Deer Leap offers with none of the cars. Climb from the village, flop by the beacon mound and watch the light move across the moors. Bring the OS map — signage is minimal.

The scarp-edge high point above Westbury-sub-Mendip, an old beacon site of limestone turf next to the Lynchcombe reserve, staring across the Levels to the sea.

Open access land under the Countryside & Rights of Way Act. You're free to roam on foot beyond the paths. Dogs on a short lead 1 March to 31 July and around livestock.
