Black Down (Mendip)

Our verdict

The closest thing the Mendips have to a mountain top. Go in August when the heather's out, stay for the lights coming on across the Levels.

The Mendips' highest ground — a whaleback of heather and bilberry rising to the trig point on Beacon Batch, pocked with WWII decoy mounds.

Open access land under the Countryside & Rights of Way Act. You're free to roam on foot beyond the paths. Dogs on a short lead 1 March to 31 July and around livestock.
