Pit Wood

Our verdict

A footpath wood with archaeology in its lumps and bumps. Cross it on the way up Ham Hill and spare a thought for the quarrymen; every golden building from Montacute to Sherborne Abbey started as holes like these.

Trees over old hamstone quarry pits at the foot of Ham Hill near Norton Sub Hamdon — hollows and hummocks under the canopy telling the story of centuries of stone-getting.

A small wood on old quarry ground below Ham Hill, open at all times.
