Gross' Wood

Our verdict

A footnote to the Ham Hill country, and content to be one. Fold it into a field-path loop from Norton's pub and it adds a green quarter-mile; the name alone is worth the detour once.

A field-edge wood below Ham Hill at Norton Sub Hamdon, young native planting in a sloping pasture — the 'shootalong field' of the old name — with hamstone villages and the Ham Hill ridge for company.

A small Woodland Trust wood reached across fields, open at all times. No car park.
