Our verdict
The best butterfly wood on the ridge, and July is the month to catch it — the rides are thick with fritillaries and the wood links straight into the neighbouring copses if you want to make a longer loop of it.
Broadleaf woodland cloaking the Polden slopes near Butleigh, one of a chain of connected copses managed by the Wildlife Trust for its butterflies — wide rides that fill with silver-washed fritillaries and marbled whites through high summer.
