Five Barrows Hill

Our verdict

Barrow-top solitude on the empty southern moor. Nothing here but wind, ponies and four thousand years of burials — which is exactly the point.

One of the highest points on Exmoor at 1,617 feet, crowned with a cemetery of nine Bronze Age barrows and views from Dartmoor to the Welsh coast.

Open access land under the Countryside & Rights of Way Act. You're free to roam on foot beyond the paths. Dogs on a short lead 1 March to 31 July and around livestock.
