Langford Lakes

Our verdict

One of the best-equipped reserves on this list — level paths, toilets, a café and proper hides make it an easy choice whatever the weather, and a genuinely good spot for birdwatchers of any experience level.

Four lakes and a wet scrape in the Wylye Valley between Salisbury and Warminster, a genuinely good birdwatching spot with around 150 species recorded and six hides overlooking the water. Good level paths make it one of the more accessible reserves in the area, and the Trust runs the on-site Kingfisher Café.

Wiltshire Wildlife Trust reserve — free to explore on foot; many are dog-free to protect wildlife.
