A proper, sizeable forest walk with a genuinely unusual living tradition behind it — worth timing a visit for Oak Apple Day if you want to see the custom in action, though the woods themselves are good walking any time of year.
One of the largest tracts of forest in Wiltshire, standing on a chalk ridge above the River Wylye and once the largest royal forest in the county — the only one mentioned in the Domesday Book. The villagers of Great Wishford still hold an ancient right to gather wood here, formally renewed every Oak Apple Day (29 May) with a procession into the forest and a trip to Salisbury Cathedral to proclaim their rights, shouting 'Grovely! Grovely! Grovely!' at the high altar.
