Our verdict
More a landmark to walk towards than a place to wander freely — the footpath around the fort's edge gives good views over the Avon valley, and it slots neatly into a longer circular walk from Downton if you want more than a there-and-back.
A univallate Iron Age hillfort roughly five kilometres south of Salisbury, occupying a prominent hilltop 142 metres above the valley of the River Avon. Apart from a footpath skirting one side, most of the fort itself sits on private land — a public footpath along the parish boundary runs south-west to north-east around its south-eastern edge, with several longer circular routes from Downton or Pitton taking it in.
Open access land — you can roam freely on foot.
