One of the best-equipped reserves on this list, with a genuine choice of routes and new kissing gates linking the old and new parts of the reserve. A reliable, easy-to-reach spot close to Salisbury — good for a proper wildflower walk without needing to venture deep into the Chase.
A 70-hectare Wiltshire Wildlife Trust reserve of rolling chalk downland, steep slopes and a dry valley just south-west of Salisbury, part of it a SSSI for its rare flora and fauna. Herdwick sheep and Dexter cattle graze the grassland to keep it species-rich — late May and June bring harebells, bee orchid, pyramidal orchid and Wiltshire's county flower, the burnt orchid, with Adonis blue, chalkhill blue and marbled white butterflies through summer. Four timed, waymarked routes of varying length are signposted from the main entrances.
