A proper local nature reserve rather than a big day out — the traffic noise from the bypass is never far away, but it's a well-used, well-managed patch of woodland that's easy to reach if you're in Chippenham. Good for a short dog walk rather than a special trip.
A five-hectare Wiltshire Wildlife Trust reserve hemmed in by housing estates and the Chippenham bypass — not a wilderness escape, but a genuinely good pocket of oak, ash and field maple woodland that's actively coppiced for wildlife. Wood anemones and bluebells carpet the floor in spring, and it's a reliable spot for butterflies through summer.
