Our verdict
About as empty as Exmoor gets, and the mire restoration work has made it wetter still — proper boots, and expect to pick your line. Navigation matters here: there's no phone signal, few landmarks and the weather turns fast.
High, boggy moorland on the edge of The Chains, above the Hoar Oak Water valley. The Two Moors Way crosses the old Royal Forest boundary here and runs down past Hoar Oak Cottage, one of the remotest buildings in the West Country.
Open access land — you can roam freely on foot.
