Our verdict
Genuinely special underfoot — barrows and sinkholes both — but exposed and shadeless, so take water on a hot day. Best combined with Black Down and the Hardy Monument as one longer ridge walk.
The high chalk ridge running west from Black Down, carrying one of the densest concentrations of Bronze Age round barrows in southern England — bell barrows and a double bowl barrow strung out along a mile of skyline. The hilltop is also riddled with over 200 shake holes, conical hollows formed where sandy Bagshot Beds collapse into dissolved chalk below.
