Our verdict
A reliable, well-used spot — free parking, decent tracks and one of the best short leg-stretches in this guide. Sheep graze the open ground near the monument, so lead up in season.
The forested hill topped by the Hardy Monument, with a free Dorset Council car park and picnic area at the summit. Below the open grassy top, conifer plantation covers much of the slope, criss-crossed with bridleways and forest tracks down towards Waddon and Portesham.
