Thorncombe Beacon

Our verdict

A rollercoaster stretch of coast path with terrific views and real history — one of the best walks in this area if you don't mind the ups and downs. Combine with Doghouse Hill for a fuller circuit from Eype.

A National Trust hill on the coast path between Eype and Seatown, once part of the Armada-era beacon chain warning of the Spanish fleet in 1588. The coast to the west is noted for rare beetles found nowhere else in Britain, and both Eype and Thorncombe Beacon Mouth are popular for fossil-hunting.
