St Gabriel's and Filcombe Woods

Our verdict

A quieter, more atmospheric way to approach Golden Cap than the direct Seatown climb, with genuine history at the ruined chapel. Easy to combine into a longer Langdon Hill/Golden Cap circuit.

National Trust woodland below Golden Cap around the abandoned medieval hamlet of Stanton St Gabriel, mentioned in the Domesday Book and now reduced to a handful of cottages and the ruined 13th-century St Gabriel's Chapel. Ancient trackways thread through the trees towards the coast.
