Our verdict
One of the best short, steep climbs in this part of Dorset for the view alone — properly worth the pull up. Sheep graze the down, so dogs need to stay on a lead, especially March to July when ground-nesting birds are also around.
A 263-metre chalk summit above the Blackmore Vale with some of the widest views in north Dorset, in the ownership of Shaftesbury Abbey for nearly 800 years before the Dissolution. In 1588 it was one of the beacons lit to warn of the Spanish Armada, and its distinctive round-topped profile is a Blackmore Vale landmark for miles around.
