Our verdict
A lovely spring wildflower walk, best combined with Fiddleford Mill itself just across the river — go April to June for the bluebells and orchids, and expect it to be muddy along the riverbank after rain.
Ancient oak and hazel-coppice woodland on the River Stour, part of a Site of Special Scientific Interest with Piddles Wood across the A357. Bluebells, stitchwort and a notable stand of early purple orchids flower each spring, and the reserve holds dormice and several bat species. Access is via the Fiddleford Mill car park.
Dorset Wildlife Trust reserve — free to explore on foot; some are dog-free or on-lead to protect wildlife.
