Lower Moor Farm

Our verdict

The easiest introduction to this whole cluster of reserves — flat, well-signed, with a wheelchair-friendly boardwalk as far as Mallard Lake, and a proper café open Wednesday to Sunday. Otters and kingfishers do turn up, though don't bank on it. Keep going past the visitor centre and you're into Clattinger Farm's SSSI meadows if you want more.

The gateway reserve to a whole cluster of Wiltshire Wildlife Trust sites — Clattinger Farm, Oaksey Moor Farm Meadow and Sandpool — built around three former gravel-pit lakes, brooks, boardwalks and wildflower meadow. There's a visitor centre, bird hides and the Dragonfly Café for cake with a lake view.

Wiltshire Wildlife Trust reserve — free to explore on foot; many are dog-free to protect wildlife.
