Our verdict
One of the best short, high-reward walks on this list — free parking a stone's throw from both the hillfort ramparts and the White Horse viewpoint. Steep in short bursts and sheep graze the site regularly, so keep dogs on a lead.
An Iron Age hillfort on the western edge of Salisbury Plain, with the chalk-cut Westbury White Horse carved into the escarpment just below it — the oldest of Wiltshire's white horses, most recently recut in 1778. English Heritage manages the site with a large free car park immediately south of the hillfort, and the escarpment gives sweeping views west towards Bath and the Mendips.
Open access land — you can roam freely on foot.
