One of the genuine must-see spots in this whole county — free to walk among the stones any time, with a proper car park, toilets and a pub right on site. Paths get uneven and muddy in the surrounding downland, but the north-west and south-west sectors of the circle itself are wheelchair and mobility-scooter accessible in dry weather. Busy year-round, especially weekends.
The largest stone circle in the world, encircling most of Avebury village, and the centrepiece of a World Heritage Site that spans several National Trust landholdings around the henge — out past West Kennet Avenue, towards East Kennett and Winterbourne Monkton, and up onto the rolling chalk downland beyond. The Avebury Ridgeway walk threads through the circle and the avenue of standing stones before climbing into open country, passing Bronze Age burial mounds on the way.
