Our verdict
A genuinely moving spot as much as a scenic one — park in the layby on the A30 and walk up, keeping to the path since the badges themselves are actively protected from erosion. Worth combining with the wider Fovant Down open access land for a longer walk.
A chalk hillside above the village of Fovant carved with regimental badges cut by soldiers garrisoned here before being sent to the trenches in the First World War. Of the 20 or so badges visible by 1918, nine survive today, scheduled as ancient monuments and recognised by the Imperial War Museum as war memorials — a waymarked path descends across the steep hillside past them, with the surrounding down open to walk.
