Stockhill Woods

Our verdict

An unglamorous conifer plantation that comes into its own when everywhere else is a swamp. Flat, sheltered, drains well. Your February default.

Dense spruce and pine on the high Mendip plateau, threaded with wide, well-drained forestry tracks. Not pretty in a postcard way, but reliable in all weathers and big enough to lose the crowds.

Public working forest. Roam the tracks freely, just heed the felling and bike signs.
