Northern Spur, Ham Hill

Our verdict

The bit of Ham Hill the picnickers never find. Walk the northern earthworks under the trees for quarry-history-and-ramparts atmosphere, then rejoin the crowds at the war memorial having had the interesting half to yourself.

The tree-clad northern rampart of Ham Hill's Iron Age fort, where the hamstone quarry ledges drop towards Stoke-sub-Hamdon under a cover of ash and sycamore.

The wooded northern arm of Ham Hill Country Park, open at all times.
