Our verdict
The green front door to the best ridge walk on western Mendip. In its own right a lovely spring wood — go in May for the garlic-and-bluebell double act — but its real job is launching you up onto Wavering Down and Crook Peak with lime trees for company.
Ancient ash and small-leaved lime woodland climbing the scarp between Axbridge and Winscombe, carpeted with bluebells and wild garlic in spring. The West Mendip Way runs straight through, linking Wavering Down and Crook Peak.
