Little Solsbury Hill

Our verdict

Climb it at dusk with the song in your head and the city lights coming on below. Short, steepish and quietly magic — the best free view of Bath there is.

The flat-topped Iron Age hillfort above Batheaston that Peter Gabriel set to music — a National Trust plateau of ramparts and grassland looking clean across Bath.

Open access land under the Countryside & Rights of Way Act. You're free to roam on foot beyond the paths. Dogs on a short lead 1 March to 31 July and around livestock.
