Our verdict
The valley the A396 rushes through and never stops for. Timberscombe's bridleway climb onto Croydon Hill is a proper unsung half-day — deep lanes, dark woods, then miles of forest track with nobody on them.
Oak and conifer woods climbing from the red-soiled Avill valley at Timberscombe towards Croydon Hill, in the soft wooded corner of Exmoor between Dunster and Wheddon Cross. Bridleways rise through the trees to open forest rides above.
Steep woodland around Timberscombe in the Avill valley, open on the bridleway network. Leads on near stock.
