Larcombe Wood

Our verdict

For connoisseurs of nowhere. There's no car park, no waymark trail and no view until the wood lets you out onto the hill — which is precisely the appeal. Build it into a Winsford Hill round and enjoy the silence.

A quiet fold of oak and beech in the combes between Winsford and the Barle valley, deep in the least-visited middle of Exmoor. Streams, moss and the occasional startled deer.

Steep combe woodland in the national park, reached on foot from the lanes. Livestock graze the surrounding land — leads on.
