Greyfield Wood

Our verdict

North Somerset's coalfield history with a canopy on it — you're walking pit tramways whether you notice or not, and noticing is the fun. One of the better Trust woods in the old coal country: big enough for a real walk, quiet enough to hear the woodpeckers.

A big broadleaf wood on the site of Greyfield Colliery above High Littleton, where oak and birch have swallowed the spoil heaps, tramways and the old Somerset & Dorset trackbed. Bluebells in spring and industrial ghosts all year.

Woodland Trust wood on old colliery ground, open at all times. Paths get properly muddy in winter.
