Our verdict
The heathland setting is lovely and the history genuinely adds something — gorse and heather stretching away much as Lawrence would have known them — but it gets a steady trickle of visitors heading for the cottage, so it's not the quietest patch of heath around here. Ground-nesting Dartford warblers and nightjars mean dogs need to stay on the main tracks (or on a lead) through the spring and summer nesting season.
Open heathland CRoW access land around the isolated cottage where T. E. Lawrence ("Lawrence of Arabia") lived and died in a road accident in 1935; the National Trust cottage itself sits within it but the surrounding heath is separate open-access land, part of the Lawrence of Arabia Trail between Moreton and Bovington.
