Our verdict
A genuinely impressive earthwork with a steep first ten minutes and then easy walking round the ramparts, looking over the Stour to Hambledon Hill. Cattle graze the interior and it's National Trust land, so dogs on leads throughout.
The largest Iron Age hillfort in Dorset at 54 acres, its multiple ramparts once enclosing up to 250 roundhouses. The Romans took it around AD 43 and built their own fort into the north-west corner, the only such arrangement in Britain.
