Our verdict
One for a warm still day in June when the fritillaries are out — the flower-rich sward is the point rather than the walk. There are no made paths and the coombe is steep-sided, so it needs reasonable legs and a bit of route-finding.
A downland coombe on the west edge of the chalk six miles north of Dorchester, looking over Cattistock towards Eggardon Hill and the coast. Unimproved chalk grassland managed by Butterfly Conservation, with over thirty butterfly species including the threatened Marsh Fritillary.
